Here is a third species of orchid I saw on a hike the other day.

    Pseudorchis albida.

Here are some pictures of Iceland that I promised.

This is the waterfall, Gullfoss, in Southern Iceland.

This is the largest Glacier, Vatnaj÷kull, in Southern Iceland. The glacier is up on the mountain in the background and the lake in the foreground is "Glacier Lake".

These are two images of Hˇlar, a small town (village?) up in Northern Iceland.

    Enjoy!

PS I hope you are enjoying a warm summer, since the average temperature here in Iceland is a cool 53F - 65F (11.6C - 18.3C).

WOW! It really is beautiful. 65 degrees F sounds good about now. It gets so hot here during the day.

    Cheers,

beautiful pictures of Iceland... always wanted to see what it was like seeing as two of my fave musicians both hail from that part of the world (ie Bjork and Sigur Ros).

can't believe that the summer temps there are the same as our winter temps here in Sydney though

    Thanks for the kind words!

I can't describe or capture the beauty of this place in words or pictures. It's a place you just have to experience yourself.

Cute, thanks for sharing. Isn't Iceland very cold? How do orchids grow in cold places?

Mary: There are orchids native to every continent of the world, expect for Antarctica, and it is the largest plant family out of all the Angiosperms. Most of the diversity and bio-mass are in the tropics, but there are quite a few orchids that grow in temperate zones and tundras, thus they are adapted to surviving and ice and cold. However, these orchids are usually the ones that are very difficult to cultivate, because either they need very specific mycorrhizal fungi present in the soil or they are parasites, but they all need to experience seasonal change (both temperature and light) to grow properly. All of these things can equal one big headache.

As for Iceland, it is a relatively mild climate all year round despite being so close to the Arctic circle. This is because the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean and all the precipitation/storms brought my the jet stream bring warmth to the island. So Iceland is a balmy 55-65F during the summer months and an average of 32F during the winter months.

I hope this answers your questions!
