Default Coryanthes macrantha, with guided tour

    Three days before opening:

    One day before:

    And open:

I put together a whole guided tour to this flower; 17 photos in all, with lots of detail and information with each photo. It's here:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/dewittk...7621863963295/

From the individual photo pages, you can get to large and super-large photos by clicking on "all sizes," just above the photo.

Those of you with Flickr accounts please do feel free to comment on the individual photo pages! I'm on Flickr often enough that I'll see your comments quickly, and will write back.

    Hope you enjoy it!

Beautiful. Our Coryanthes has been blooming recently too. Wonderful fragrance. Is this one fragrant?

    Cheers,

Out of this world ! I can imagine a figure of a gymnast in mid air, with legs folded at the knees.

There's LOTS of further information in the individual photo pages, which are annotated with all kinds of stuff about pollination, flower parts, and so on.

You'll see there that, although it does look like a gymnast from here—which is cool, and something I hadn't seen in it—it looks like a lot of other things as well, such as a goblin, bucket, or chicken fetus.

The scent was chalky, fruity, minty, and medicinal; almost exactly a cross between Pepto-Bismol and cherry cough syrup.

It finished blooming a couple days ago, but has another spike on the way—with two buds!

You're killing me with these photos. I have to get that Olympus. I need a new camera anyway.
