    Default The Maxillaria That Could

I purchased this Maxillaria tenuifolia a few years ago and it has never bloomed for me. I tried everything and back in May, I threw my hands in the air, tossed the plant outside, and told it to fend for itself. I ventured out into the garden today and I couldn't believe my eyes! A gorgeous bloom and many more to come!! It just goes to show that we should never give up on our orchids because they never really give up on us. Sometimes we are simply trying too hard!

Margo, I'm not sure what triggered this guy to bloom. I've had it for 3 years and nothing until now! I think it was the fact that I stopped pampering it!

Yes, Amey, I adore the smell. Toasted coconut!

    Meg, thank you!

Congrats on the blooms! LOL. I had heard before that threatening an orchid with the garbage could induce it to produce blooms. I guess it really does work!

These are such cool plants . The number one reason that orchids don't bloom is that they aren't receiving enough light.

Thanks Susan. That's the first thing I assess: light. I had this plant growing in direct sun all winter and also tried growing it under HID lights and it never bloomed. Sometimes, orchids have a mind of their own!
