The Phaiocalanthe was in bud already when I brought the orchid bare rooted from Bremen last month, the blooms were not expected, but the flowers are delightful.

They are beautiful . I remember the first time I saw Phaius in the early 90's when I went to the Miami Orchid Show. I was amazed at their size and beauty. They are not commonly grown where I live due to the culture requirements, but I do admire them.

I have a Phaius tankervilliae seems easy to grow - water often. I got one division and now has 2 new growths. not sure if spikes or what. At the Brooklyn Botanic garden their 2 specimens in clay pots are spiking. I think it would do well in Seattle.

pretty easy to find at auction sites.
Also when the blooms are gone you can cut the stem and plant it horizontally and new plants will form from each node.
The leaves are also nice. like a young coconut palm or a more elegant Coelogyne with no PBs.
like both the plants posted. Is the Phaiocalanthe deciduous?

Yes, the Phaius is really big, the inflorescence is towering well over 30 inches. And there are three more inflorescences forming.

This is my first year growing this beauty, but I think it is deciduous as the two older pseudobulbs are leafless. I am also going to give a try to plant the inflorecence stalks and get more Phaius plants.
