Smile The benefits of going on vacation...

    Aloha all-

Took a vacation (2 wks) recently and was admittedly worried that I didn't have anyone watching my place- or my orchids (and other plants)- while I was gone. Imagine my surprise to come home to blooms started before vacation not only still quite healthy- but producing new blooms as well (Den. Burana Stripe x Burana Pearl & Den. White Fairy x Burana White)

    Images & explanations:

Pic 1- Den. Burana Stripe x Burana Pearl.JPG: before vacay, only two of the eight or nine flowers in this image were in existence.

Pic 2- Den. Burana Stripe x Burana Pearl 'Triplets'.JPG: All new!!!

Pic 3- Den. White Fairy x Burana White 'Twins'.JPG: Foreground bloom took place before vacation; background bloom is new.

Pic 4- Den. White Fairy x Burana White with Den. Burana Stripe x Burana Pearl blooms in background: all blooms in this image are new and appeared while I was out.

I also have a number of new shoots and leaves all over the collection.

My Secret? I lightly watered all my plants the day of my departure- using my normal super-secret ingredient (Schultz Plant Food, 10-15-10) and also placed about a 1/2" to 1" lukewarm water in the tray. All of my orchids are elevated above the bottom of the tray (using "stilts" of sorts). The tray was indeed dry upon returning. I'm guessing the Hawaiian climate didn't hurt, however (though nights and early mornings have been quite cool since returning early January.)

    with aloha from hawaii,

Congrats, Tom. What a welcome sight it must have been to be greeted by all those blooms. I am currently at the end of the first week of my 2 week holidays in Hong Kong. I have a neighbour who is taking care of my orchids but I still can't help feeling a bit apprehensive - this being the dry season at home.Just hope I'll be greeted with lots of blooms when I get home.
