    Hi Howard,

The species you are calling Bulbophyllum masdevalliaceum is B. maxillare. B. maxillare is the older name, that was validly published, and therefore B. maxillare has priority. Those are the rules of botany.

    Hi Howard,

Bulbophyllum masdevalliaceum is a native of northern Australia and New Guinea. This species, B. masdevalliaceum, was named by Kraenzlin in 1904.

    B. maxillare was named originally as a Cirrhopetalum, by Lindley, and then transferred to Bulbophyllum by Reichenbach f. in 1861.

That is where the priority comes into the name.

And while we're on the subject, maybe Jim could set us straight on another confusing Bulbo. question: Bulb. makoyanum or Cirr. makoyanum?

It is such an honor to be a member of this forum knowing that Jim Cootes is also a member here. I've had his book for over three years now and it has been very helpful for me in identifying some of the local Philippine orchid species that I have in my garden .... well, most of them though ......

    Hi Mitch,

They are both the same orchid.

Different botanists and/or taxonomists prefer a widely defined genus and call everything Bulbophyllum.

Others prefer a more limited concept of different genera and therefore Cirrhopetalum comes into the picture.

It will be interesting once DNA of the genus/genera within the Bulbophyllinae is done. We may then see a lot of genera being resurrected.

All it boils down to in the end is that these names are just someone's opinion. And we all know about opinions, they all differ from person to person.
