    Default Taeniophyllum noid, philippines

    hi folks,
someone recently posted "the smallest orchid", well i guess its a never ending search and when i saw this taeniophyllum species i thought that surely must be it...lol

this genus holds the leafless orchids and its certainly interesting. im impressed by that long spur.
there is probably plenty of unidentified species out there and so is mine...

    cheers,

    Hi Ron,

Can you give me some dimensions of the floral segments of the above Taeniophyllum please?

    How long is the inflorescence?

    All the best,

I was never aware that we had native leafless orchids here in the Philippines. All the while I thought that those leafless forms were endemic to Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. This could be a first. Did you obtain that plant locally in Leyte or elsewhere in the Philippines?

    Hi Jojo,

There are at least 7 Taeniophyllum species in the Philippines, and a number more which are undescribed.

The main reason they are poorly known is because of their leafless habit and the tiny flowers.

I have observed a number of species growing on mango trees.

Thank you so very much Jim.

I appreciate being educated on Philippine orchids (and orchids in general). It's a never-ending process.

I feel like a dwarf amidst giants in your presence.

Way back when I was an apprentice machinist, a very wise old tradesman told me: "If you don't learn something in a day you have wasted that day." Those words still ring true.
