    Default Dendrolirium ornatum

    hi,
sorry randy, if i beat you with the pix, lol.

i fell in love with this species soon as i saw those green/orange leaves and bright orange spike.
although it is related to eria, hence the former name, i give it much more light and it seems to thrive more on the dry side as well.
bloom stays open only for 2 days or so and i couldnt detect any fragrance at all, unlike described.

    cheers,

That's a funny name that was changed from Eria ornata to Dendrolirium ornata. It's almost like a Dendrobium that went delirious .... Hahaha.

Huh! Interesting shape and coloring to this guy, especially if its a dendrobium. The orange leaf at the base of the bloom and the flaming red lip are the highlights for sure.

Only two days...love the lip though. The red always stands out nicely next to white.

The reason that this species has been removed from the genus Eria is because it is not an Eria in the first place.

Over the years of that orchids have been described Eria became a "dumping ground" for a host of genera and species for what now are proving to be different genera. Many of the genera which are now being removed from Eria were originally named as genera back in 1825 by Carl Blume.

When a genus is named, normally a type species is nominated as a representative of what members of the genus should look like, both florally and in plant habit.

I suggest that you take a look at the plant and flowers of Eria javanica, which is the type species for the genus. Then take a look at the plant and flowers of Dendrolirium ornatum, which is the type species for that genus.

I would hope that you can notice the distinct differences between the 2 genera.
