Lars, mine grows a lot slower than that. I bought a seedling seven years ago and it finally bloomed for me last year for the first time. My plant is about 6.5" tall..., It is blooming now again.

@Tom: there could be two reasons for the slow growth. First the plant will grow slower when it is still small: mine is 17" tall. Some of my other Renanthera seedlings grow about an inch a year. The other possibility could be an underdeveloped root system: I grow my Renantheras in wooden baskets, with a mixture of very coarse bark and epiweb. That encourages root growth, which in turn encourages growth. I did get Renanthera cuttings in the past, in which case the best thing is to just put the cutting into an empty basket with a tiny bit of epiweb - assuming you can provide the right humidity. In my environment, I find growing Renantheras in pots difficult.

I would check the root system, when it is time to repot.

Lars, My plant is in good condition and it is in bloom now also.

17" is tall for Renanthera monachica and your plant may have reached the maximum heigh for that species. I would love to see your plant and flowers. Sometimes, Renanther matutina is mislabeled as R. monachica. The flower of both species look similar but R. matutina is a faster grower and it can get up to 3 feet tall.

Tom, a photo of flowers of my plants
    • R monachica - too dark to take a current picture. I'll take one later.
    • R matutina - quite a different flower shape
    • R Twin Star (matutina x monachica)

Of course the plants could have been mislabelled. A lot of Renanthera's are. R matutina is hardly available in Europe though, whereas plants labelled R monachica are available in abundance.

Thanks for the photos, Lars. You have both of them, then you would know the differences. No need to take another photo for me. The first photo looks like the real thing to me.

Did you raise your monachica from seedling? Mine was a small seedling and it took me seven years to bloom it out. Currently the plant is only 6-7" tall and a small basal growth...

    Beautiful flowers and great photography!
I have Renee Marcus and my experience is that it's a slow grower.
Is yours planted in any kind of media? Mine is in a regular bark mix, but I read that they do well with no media and just misted daily.

I grow mine in wooden teak baskets with a little bit of large fir bark and epiweb cubes in it: it is a very loose mix. My greenhouse is quite humid, thus pot culture is not ideal for me.
