    Default Pleurothallis schiedei

This cool-growing miniature sized species occurs in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. It can be found at altitudes of 1800-2400m. The plant grows to about 3-4cm and the flowers 8-10mm.

The ornaments on the flower are likely to be wax excretions. They are very sensitive to wind and static electricity. It is speculated that the "jiggling" in the breeze of the structures attracts potential pollinators.

That is seriously so cool. I love the 'icicles' on this one. It is like a victorian lamp or something. Awesome.

Always enjoy when I see these at shows. It really is surprising just how sensitive the 'tassels' are.

That is a great idea. And we even have a place for it here: Technical Photography Discussions if you want.

I'd think the flower was pretty on its own, and with the tassles it's so interesting. I wonder if there are other flowers that have wax excretions like this to use for attracting pollinators. Wonder also what the plant looks like.
