Default Some blooming species from the Cameron Highlands

During my recent holidays to the Cameron Highlands 5000ft (1600m) above sea-level, I didn't visit my friend, an orchid grower specialising in local species as he is moving his whole collection, numbering a few thousand, to a new location. Any way summer isn't the flowering season for most of the species here. I'll have to wait till March or April next year.

However I managed to visit the MARDI ( Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute ) centre here which has a small collection of the local orchid species. All the orchids pictured here are from the collection in this centre except for Phaius tankerville and Phal gigantea.

Pix #1 - Chelonistele sulphurea(?) related to Coelogyne - common here but
not sure about ID. Flower size 1cm

    Pix#2 - Close-up of flower - coudln't get any closer.Didn't bring my macro
    lens. Must be moral here.

Pix#3 - Another lighter coloured variety.

    Pix#4 - Den linguella. Flower size 8mm

    Default Arundina grainifolia and bulbophyllum

Here are more pictures of Cameron Highlands species in bloom.

Pix#5 - Arundina graminifolia- I find this colour form decidedly 'bluish'
compared to the normal in the next pix.

Pix#6 - Normal purplish form of A graminifolia

    Pix#7 - Bulbophyllum(?) NOID

Pix#8 - NOID but local species

Default Paph lowii, phal gigantea, phaius tankerville

The Phal gigantea was growing in an orchid nursery.Though it is not found here in the Camerons I just had to post a picture of it as it was such a healthy plant growing here in the highlands. The leaves were almost 2ft long.Compare it with the bird-nest fern growing beneath it. The Phaius tankerville was also growing in this nursery.

The Paph lowii used to be found here in abundance but over-collecting has decimated their numbers in the wild. Here they grow as epiphytes in the branches of trees.

I like all of them and the Phal gigantea is truly amazing but the another one I saw the last time I was here, was at least one and a half times larger and had a spike 3 times longer than this one. It has been sold to a collector for US$500!

We have a Den linguella here which is completely white without the purple spot, but I find the Cameron variety cuter with the spot.
