    Hi Connie,

Yes, I found Dendrochilum cootesii growing in its native habitat, after a long search.

I first saw this plant in the collection of an old friend here in Sydney, Australia. After much detective work the locality was found.

It was named for me because of the contributions I have made to Philippine orchidology over the last 30 odd years.

In fact I am fortunate enough to have 4 other species named in my honour.

    All the best,

    Jim Cootes

    Hi Boy,

Good luck in your search for the cootesii's.

Bulbophyllum cootesii is from northern Mindanao. Cylindrolobus (Eria) cootesii comes from the east coast of Luzon. The other 2 are endemics to Mindoro.

    Hey boy,

I think I saw that plant too last Sunday but decided to pass on it since I already have one just like it.

I noticed that you placed it in a plastic pot and added coconut fiber-husk. Be careful as that plant (most dendrochilums for that matter) do not like to get soggy wet. They prefer to get plenty of bright light and medium watering and they should dry out quickly or else the leaves will drop off one at a time from too much water from the medium. That is why you may have noticed how the vendors from Nueva Vizcaya planted it? They wrapped the plant around a clump of moss and passed a short segment of laundry wire through the middle of the media for hanging so that everytime you would water it, it would dry out quickly. See the logic of why they mounted it that way (although a bit not on the aesthetic side).

These plants are somewhat cool growers so place it in a spot where it is cool but gets plenty of bright light.

    Good luck on the culture.

    Hey Randy and Boy,

FYI, the flea market (tiangge) will be relocating soon to a different venue. I believe it will be moved to the corner of Quezon Avenue and EDSA Hi-way just right across the Manila Seedling Bank. You know that small mall building there right next to the LRT? That's where it'll be relocated and I heard the stalls will be situated in the parking area at the back of the building. Unfortunately the vendors will not be allowed to be sleeping in their stalls unlike what they have been doing at the lung center. I heard that some new building will be built over the spot where the flea market is now located in the Lung Center that is why the vendors were asked to move out.

This will happen sometime perhaps around November I think.
