I have seen it growing in Costa Rica - actually i someone's garden - collected " from the woods above" I was told, when I enquired. I love it, although it never seems to be very floriferous ? In fact I think I have seen half a dozen plants - in Central America or in pots here in Europe, ad I have never seen more than a single flower.
That has not stopped me trying to grow it, but it just doesn;t like my conditions, I guess - I have a plant now, but it is more hanging on than actually growing.
If I get it right, it was not actually that hot , at the height it must have been, when I saw it .

Hi Geoff when I compare between Huntleya vargasii and H. burtii I noted burtii more floriferous, right now I can see another spike come from the leaf axil, I have another huntleya species very huge plant, so far all the spikes blasted I dont know why never mine just give a time.I thinks yours to cold maybe that the reason refused to bloom and relatively some sort like dormant. Maybe you need to hang relatively to the bright light and hot in your green house.

I think not warm enough is about right - it has been the answer with other orchids shown to perfection here - in other threads - which have not done well for me ( some Paph leucochilum etc , most recently). You will realise that for half the year I have to use artificial heat - a gas boiler and hot water radiators actually - and the cost of running this is a major factor. As a rule of thumb, an extra 3 degrees centrigade can double the cost I think. And since so many orchids grow very happily at my minimum night temperature of 15, and minimum day temperature of 20 ,that I have to learn to stop lusting after plants which I can't grow.
But bright light surprises me for Huntleya ? I have been giving them a darker position.

Geoff go for bright light slowly hoping it will work, I agree with you it's not that easy to grow warm/hot orchids in in northern hemisphere like mine I cant grow highland orchids although there are many here in Malaysia, they can produce beautiful leaves but refused to bloom, I love paph so much but just observed only...
