I saw a reference to Thaipusam in 'The Star' newspaper, but I think that is not correct. My friends and I have been growing this Coelogyne for more than 40 years and it is always called th 'Deepavalli' or 'Diwali' orchid as it blooms around October which is the month for Deepavalli. For our non-Hindu friends, Dwali called 'the festival of lights' is celebrated by ethnic Malaysian Indians of the Hindu faith, and signifies the the victory of good over evil.

owh, i see. thanks for the info catttan. yeah, i saw the reference from The Star as well, and through that i was given a task to dig out more bout this species and come up with a write-up because we have a pot blooming in our farm at the moment. so do u think the one featured in The Star is Coelogyne rochussenii? by the way, the flower smells somewhat like lemon-scent right?

Yes Jessica, it smells sweet. Some say like honey others say like lemon. But it is a sweet smell.

Sorry, I'm not good at defining scent - 'I like it' or 'I don't like it' -type of person. The nearest I can describe it, is that it smells like the Indian incense stick, and that is another reason why it is associated with the Deepavalli celebration.
