    Default Cycnoches Taiwan Gold “Orchis"

This is the reason for my discontent with Cycnodes Jumbo Puff. The two are too similar. I might even have thought one was mislabelled, but both my plants are spot on true to name from Orchidwiz. My plant shown here has two bulbs each with 2 spikes, with a total of between 30 and 40 flowers and buds. Quite reasonably long-lasting flowers – a good 4 weeks. Moreover the old bulbs don’t seem to shrivel and rot as easily as do most other of my Catasetinae , so I sometimes get a propagation from them, and as a result now have at least one other plant in bud, and have given several decent plants as raffle prizes at my Orchid Soc.

Very intrigued by both your Cyc Taiwan Gold and Cycnodes Jumbo Puff and so I googled and found an interesting article/discussion about them.

For those interested see : catasetinae5.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Thank you so much for that article , I found it most interesting ( also the bit which appeared in the whole Google piece, about Mormodes- I had wondered if I had just been unlucky in flowering Mormodes which seemed not quite right ("assymetrical" ) as if some of the flower parts had been tweaked to the left or right, and stayed there.
The comment about confusion between C.wasrscewiczii and C.chlorochilon is also interesting ; I have two or three examples , from different sources, of both in my collection , and in some cases I have to look at the labels to know what I am supposed to be looking at - although one chlorochilon is much larger, flatter and a paler lime green, and one warscewiczii is darker, greener and smaller.
As for the comment about if Jumbo Puff could be remade with the red form - well, you can put me down as a buyer if it ever is.
I must chase up Jumbo and see if they ever visit any European country - I am sure they don't come to Uk, but then no sane trader would ( from outside the EU) due to our mad, bad and dangerous ( for killing trade) CITES fees - but I fear I shall mount my hobby horse...
Thanks again Cattan ( what should I call you ? Like most Brits I am very ignorant of the way other people use names and would hate to offend.)

I'm glad you liked the article and the other articles that went with it. My friends call me Yew Sung, ( that is my given name ) and my full name is Tan Yew Sung - Tan , being my surname. Unlike most westerners, people of Chinese origin have their surname first followed by the given name. Thus the confusion.

Thanks Yew Sung ; I was aware of the surname first part , and only two being mentioned instead of the three I am used to, it did throw me.
How very curious are the differences in these matters - e.g the Spanish practice is so different from that across the border in France, and so on. I also know that it does give offence to many people if one gets it wrong.

BTW I have found a source for Jumbo orchids , and hope to add a few to my collection early in the new year.

@Geoff; Re the Jumbo orchids; that's nice to hear. I just bought a dark Catasetum tenebrosum x Kampar Yip. Will post a picture of it in a later post.

I have both plants blooming in my kitchen right now and I did some searching to find out the parentage and why they look so similar, if not for labels I could not tell the difference, even side by side. I will say that the jumbo puff does seem to desiccate after blooming while the taiwan gold holds its back bulbs better and I have 3 divisions as a result of that difference. Thank George Carr for coming out with the reasonable explanation of a mislabeled parent as the reason for extreme similarity between these 2 plants.
