Default Cymbidiums from the Bournemouth Show

One of the entries at the show was in a class for 3 hybrids and this entry was of 3 Cymbidiums. Usually an entry here is downmarked if all the plants are of the same genus ( presumably the entrant is supposed to be demonstrating versatility ? Doesn’t make much sense to me, whatever the reason , but here the quality of the winning entry , of 3 cymbidiums, was such as to sweep all objections away ). In fact one of the three was also best hybrid (anything) in the show; this was Cym Kiri Te Kanawa , a glorious chestnut flower, long spikes of perfect flowers, and I never did get around to counting all the spikes, since I had to walk from one side of the show bench to the other to see them all, and I always got sidetracked.
A second of the 3 was Cym Lunata ‘Christmas Day’ – which I also show here, and the third was the tall white/pink flushed one seen, partially, behind Kiri’.

Many years ago when I started growing my Society at the time had a big two day Annual Show , and the classes for Cymbidiums were numerous – classes for 1 plant , for 3 plants, and for 6 plants – and then more – best seedling flowering for the first time and so on. We used to allow for entrants delivering their plants in horse boxes towed behind Land Rovers – but we had the Great Hall of a big University for the Show – held in their Easter vacation, and the Dean was one of our members, which helped quite a lot , but the cymbidiums made a fantastic display.

People don’t grow Cymbidiums like that nowadays, or maybe they are starting to do that again ? They do make sense in a country where we have to heat greenhouses at great expense, when they like it quite cool and inexpensive.

Thought for the day, that is !

Lovely plants, Geoff. Really like the closeup of the Cym Kiri Te Kanawa (?).
