I am glad Gavin that these flowers have held up so well. When you speak of your Phal. Valentinii being hardy and doing well that truly amazes me that it could take all that heat, direct sun, torrential rain and be doing so well! It just shows that plants/orchids don't always 'go by the book'. I would not tell this Phal. that it is not supposed to do well under these conditions! AL

To be honest Al sometimes I reckon rules are meant to be broken, I mean if ppl didnt challenge established thinking we might still think the earth is flat and you could sail right off the end of the world! The worse thing that could happen is that the plant dies! I dont mind sacrificing a plant now and again just to see if something can be done. Of course Im not a complete fool, I only take the chance with less valuable plants!

Very nice, Gavin. I used to have one many years ago, under the name Thecostele secunda. A week ago we had heavy rain and caused most of the durian trees to shed their flowers - no bumper crop for me this year from my 2 durian trees. But these last 3 days have been dry and very hot.

I agree with you in regards to experimentation Gavin. This can be the best and most fulfilling way to learn. I have a Encyclia Prismatocarpa and a Rossioglossum Grande where I have watered the orchids towards the wet and dry cycles found in their natural environments. The Rossioglossum went nearly three months with one watering. The Encyclia was watered every two to three weeks until mid March, now like the Rossioglossum it gets water weekly and fertilized weakly weekly. They are both in spike and healthy new growths. Cultural care instructions are often vague, so you often must experiment or not do as you should for your orchids. AL

Agreed Al, although sometimes this rather gung ho approach does lead to unintended consequences. I rather nonchalantly left my liparis latifolia out in the open and came back and found substantial sunburn on 2 leaves..poor fella...i've decided to place it back under some cover!

I agree with both of you, Al and Gavin, but with one little addition - plus a bit of of common sense. Isn't growing orchids a lot of fun?

I think they can be a lot of fun. I especially like talking to them. My advice is to use soothing words like..........bloom damm you bloom!, or how about........ I am glad my little orchid that you have decided to turn over a new leaf in life, but that's not enough! These are definitely motivational statements for unresponsive orchids that may help you on a bad day (I really don't know about the orchids). AL
