    Default Rhynchostylis off time bloom

I have had this plant from spring 2007, it was a 3 leaved plant with a broken root. After a few months with sphag and bag, the root produced a new rootlet from the broken tip and the plant started on a path of recovery. This plant came to from a nursery in Northeast India (Sikkim) as a Rhynchostylis retusa. This plant is also found in my state, but the plants look considerably different, the later being smaller with more channeled and retusate leaves. This plant looks more like my giganteas, but the flowers are like retusas. After growing for the past 4 years, it finally bloomed and what a show it has put up, 5 spikes each more than 1.5 feet in length. But the timing is wrong, my other retusas from my state bloom like clockwork every July for the past 5 years since I have them. This one is odd. Here are the pictures. I will ask my sister for a few closeups, just for a sense of scale, those roots are as thick as my fingers.

Very impressive Amey. Healthy plant and gorgeous flowers. I have a small Rynchostylis retusa that I have seen in bloom once with just one spike. What impressed me was the iridescence that I found quite stunning. My plant does not look as vigorous as yours, though it is slowly growing. AL

I agree with Al...What a healthy plant with gorgeous flowers! I assume that it has a sweet smell, too. Betty

Thank you everyone !! If we had orchid shows and judging in India, I would have made sure it could reach a centre, I think it could have got a ribbon for culture. All the responses I get here are no less than ribbons for sure.
