    Default Neocogniauxia monophylla

This must be one of my top five favorite orchid species in my collection. Intermediate to cool growing miniature species. The brightly colored flower is long lasting (~4 weeks). Flower(2"X1.75") is very large for the size of the plant too, but no fragrance.
This Jamaican(from Blue Mountain) species long had been treated as a Lealia relative, many hybridizers tried to cross it with species in the Laelia/Cattleya family but no luck...Guess what! Now, the DNA test has proved it is more closely related to Pleurothallids.

Excellant! I've never heard of this one before. Gorgeous flowers! How unfortunate that it requires conditions that I cannot provide.

Wow, pleurothallis! Would you believe if I told you that from the first look of the leaves I thought it was a pleuro? I check OT from my iphone and when photo's are loaded I only see the top of the photo first. But when I saw the stunning orange flower, I knew I was wrong, but then again not! Especially the small brownish stem leave made me think it was a pleuro. Thanks to molecular biology!

I've heard oif the genus, but not the species. I wonder where it grows in Jamaica ? I remember seeing Broughtonia (sanguinea of course) growing on trees arching across the Rio Ocho ( tht's what my memory says - and who is going to spend a week in the loft looking for a notebook in order to be correct in a posting ?). If you go there, e..g. from a Carribean cruise , the thing to do is go rafting on that river ; lie back, and look up, and suddenly there they are - but not Neocogniauxia.
But a pleuro ! Surely the world most flamboyant ( I'm sure I have not spelled that right ! ) pleuro ?
