Beautiful! I'm just wondering what happens to all your tropical plants during the "wet winters"? How do you keep them and let them survive?

I had a small Plectrelminthus caudatas before that I acquired but it died of rot ... my area is wet. I always wanted this plant but I wasn't able to keep mine ....

I grow orchids in a heated greenhouse.

The plants I have in the garden tolerate the conditions in London. Some of the more sensitive ones are grown in large pots on the patio and if the weather gets really cold or we get snow I cover them with fleece. Typically we tend to get 2 or 3 cold snaps of that type a winter, which usually last a week, sometimes two. In between we have milder temperatures just above 0.

I'm just drooling over here in USDA Zone 7A/B - your gardens are simply fabulous - they look like they should be included in tours of London! I'm wondering, just thinking about growing zones, where the optimum location would be, given the choice of anywhere in the world. I know it depends on which orchids one wants to grow, but still.... there must be somewhere that offers more orchid climate for more kinds of orchids. All I can say is Atlanta is a real challenge - particularly without a greenhouse.

    Maura,

Hmmm .... perhaps Vietnam is a one of those good places to start with??? Have you seen the thread of CxCanh with photos of orchids in situ??? What a fantastic variety of plants growing there naturally and so happy with the climate?

    Thanks Jojo -

Vietnam seems like the perfect place for orchids - and, yes, I have seen CxCanh's orchid photojournals. It is particularly tempting given that I have a special fondness for Old World Paphs. I fear, however, that I shall have to add Vietnam to my list of orchid visit destinations, and in the meantime, attempt to create as paph-friendly an environment in Atlanta as I can possibly manage. Of course, when my ship comes in, I shall have to establish homes in Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, London, Barbados, Santa Barbara..... the list goes on - almost as long as my wishlist for particular species!
