Default Holcoglossum flavescens x Rhyncostylis gigantea - a miniature vandaceous plant.

A first flowering for me of this little thing which has been in my collection for the past 1/2 year or more . Can't find my tape measure to put in the pic - but it's in a four inch basket, Flowers a bit under an inch across. 10 buds and flowers. Not yet at its best - I note that the earliest flower to open has turned fom cream to white - so if and when all of the buds/flowers are open and white I'll take another pic and add to this thread - but I am away for a few weeks after Xmas, so I may easily miss it; my excuse for posting now !
The Rhynco btw is said to be var Petoniana - can't find any ref to that - and gigantea comes in many colours - I have white, reds, orange and peach - the last two not yet flowered - both of my whites are in early spike. But R.gigantea is a much bigger plant - 15 inch leaf span maybe 24 inch ( no tape measure !) , leaves 2 inches wide. I don't have this holco' species in my collection - they are hard to find and I only have kimballianum so far . But from IOSPE it is a bit bigger than this, flowers very similar although the lip is not all red , and of course being a holco' it is terete, which this is not.
So it may be that this is a precocious flowering on a baby , and it can get much bigger - and have lots and lots of flowers ( the optimist speaks ! )
But intersting, don't you think - if you are a vandaceous plants fan , as I am ?

I agree, it is interesting, Geoff. I wonder how large this orchid will get. I like seeing the blooms on a smallish plant like this though.

    cheers,

It is a pretty thing. The Rhynchostylis gigantea var Petoniana is the alba form of the Rhync gigantea. Do you know how old the plant by itself is? Did the seller mention anything? I think I have seen the Holcoglossum flavescens being posted on OT as well. Hopefully one of them will reply to you.

It is a seedling flowering for the first time ever, as well as the first time for me. If you look at the pic of the whole plany. you will see that the lowest leaves are less than 1 inch long, and get progressively larger - the latest are approaching 4 inches long.

I really am into the vanda types as well. I love the smaller ones. For some reason they seem to bloom much easier than the full size...for me anyways. I'd love to find a local vendor that also likes them. lol Are the smaller vanda as slow growing as the large? I haven't had mine long enough to know.

Wonderful hybrids, gigantea still dominant in this crossing.

I'm not really a vanda fan - can't really grow them on a windowsill in your living room - but this really caught my eye. The entire plant is beautifully proportioned, and the white in the blooms flawless. Does it have any fragrance?
You mentioned you were going away after Christmas for a few weeks - given the most recent disaster that occurred while you were away, what are you going to do this time?
