This is the second time my Maxillaria tenuifolia has bloomed. There are seven blooms but four of the blooms are on such short stems that they cannot fully open. Is this a common occurance with this plant?

It is common for this species with short spike ...your flower is fully open.

And congratulations on blooming it. Some folks have a hard time with this orchid. Mine struggled along for years. Now it is in full bloom. Such wonderful fragrance.

Looks good to me! Yes, often the blooms don't open fully, however, I have found that this happens when conditions are not ideal. I practically 'fry' mine and keep it on the moist side and it blooms like mad!
