Beautiful yellow. Ian. My 'pink pileatum has just bloomed with female flowers again! in spite of putting it in deep shade when the buds were forming. I'll be giving it the cold treatment if and when the next spike forms.

thx. arrrrggh...would really love to see the male pileatum pink of yours. however i had not read about temperature effect on sex determiantion on flowers of catasetum in the book World of Catasetums.
however here is a paragraph of the text
" In naturalfemale flowers are produces in smaller proportion than the males. if female flowers are wanted the plant should be kept at the limit of the light for the species, but if male flowers are preferred, as they usually are unless the grower seeks the production of seed capsules, the plant should be grown in shadier site. flower sex is very hard to predict, even if the growers pays attention to the amount of light exposure, but it is smart to play the percentages. certain plants, perhaps owing to their inherent vigor, seem to be disposed to produce female flowers year after year.

however the author is right about the prediction part and also the part on it is wise to play the percentages. i got a sanguineum that started to bloom, (i think that plant is determined to throw female flowers) but i kept in heavy shade area, it ended up with a female on the bottom, two hermaphrodites on the mid level and a male at the end of the inflorescence.

Yew Sung, perhaps you should start dividing the plant......haha.

Thanks Ian for the info. Perhaps it's getting too much nutrition. Starvation diet from now on. However the pileatum 'Icy Green' is behaving nicely and has 9 male buds about to open soon. The most consistent and vigorous bloomer Cstm Tengku Zainab Petra has just bloomed with 15 flowers and looks more like its fimbriatum parent. This particular plant responds very quickly to temperature changes and I've had the male, female and hermaphrodite flowers on the same spike just like your sanguineum. My Jumbo Pearl which has produced only female flowers, the last 2 seasons, is going to sleep with me every night in the air-con room when it spikes.
