Default Catasetum Tunku Zainab Petra in bloom

I have a few divisions of this Catasetum and this is the first to bloom with one spike bearing 15 flowers. I have posted pictures of this plant before. Another division is coming out with 2 spikes. The flowers always attract the small paper-nest wasps. These wasps are very common in our gardens and love to make their nests under the broad leaves of Dracaena and leaves of the ginger family. They live in small colonies of up to 2 dozen or more individuals and can give quite painful stings when their nests are disturbed but the pain usually subsides in less than 1/2 an hour, unless you are allergic to the stings.

The flowers always remind me of birds in flight. BTW Cstm T Zanab Petra = Cstm Sumani x fimbriatum.

    Great catasetum Mabuhay,

It looks like the Ctsm. fimbriatum influence is very strong in this hybrid. I have a couple of Ctsm. fimbriatum seedling, but they're still a year or two away from blooming. Hopefully they'll be as floriferous as your plants.

BTW, the critters in that flower are really interesting (and quite pretty in my own humble opinion) but they aren't actually small paper wasps, they're paper wasp mimics. They're flies that look like paper wasps so that predators leave them alone. This is a very common trait among hover flies in particular, who often mimic bees and wasps that live in the same habitat as they do. The flies in the picture are more closely related to house flies though and not to hover flies (if you take away the colours, it's quite easy to see that they have exactly the same body shape as house flies).

Thanks Tony for IDing the flies. They do mimic the wasps that are so common in our gardens.

those are just lovely, always a treat to see what you've got blooming, yew! paper wasps, mimicking flies... eh, they add such a sense of purpose to the pictures of the orchids... little reminders that there is business to be done with them flowers, not just to be looked at ya know!
