Stupid question...how can you tell the females from the males? Innies and outties?

not a stupid question at all, me too started off with that question. you can have a look in picture two, the is a pair of antenna, these are present only in male flowers or hermaphrodites. and the female flowers have a dome shape in appearance. in addition, male flowers differs from catasetums to catasetum while the female look almost alike.
however certain species from the hooded catasetums may look like a female flower to a untrained eye, but the trick is always look for the trigger pollina (antenna)

Very pretty Ian, Look almost like pileatum. First time I've seen such attractive female flowers!

Thanks for the explanation Ian, is that only for these or is it a general thing to look for in all orchids? I like the soft yellow of these, very nice. Catasetums are cool weather orchids right?

sexual dimorphism only occurs in catasetums, cynoches and perhaps a few other genera (i am not sure of others). most orchids are perfect flowers, bearing both stigma and pollen.
catasetums are warm growers, they do not like anything lower than 16 Celsius (if my memory serves me correctly).
