What Vanda Rasri has brought to the party seems to be mainly yellow colour ; the Paraphalaenopsis cross is a primary between P.denevei ( which I have never seen) and laycockii- both of which are rather more interesting colours than this hybrid . Ah well, we can't have everything can we...
Paraphal' species are hard to come by in UK, and when I have bought them they have looked to be rather poor plants, and I have not been surprised when they gave up the ghost. At least this plant lives - well, for 5 months so far - and flowers too . Wow !
I think I am wasting my time and money on this line of breeding - our conditions here do not seen to suit these semi-terete leaved vandaceous things. Or maybe they could, I just haven't adjusted the possibilities to best advantage so far.
I suppose that at the worst , in the case of this plant, it should be easier to grow than any of the parents, simply because hybrids always are easier than species. Sometimes when they disappoint, as here, that is the only consolation.
Doom and Gloom - cheer up Geoff there is light at the end of the tunnel ... what's that you say ? It's a train coming the other way ?....

ps top pic flower colour is right - at the cost of unreal green leaves ! Hence the second try, but that colour is not correct on the bottom pic - but no time/enthusiasm/energy to go round the circuit once more making possible corrections.

It is an unusual color, which would be very desirable to some. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I would probably choose a flower like yours just because I like the play of the yellow and brown. To my eye...it's a nice one. lol

Just mulling this over a bit.... It's a luxury of great orchid growers like you, Geoff, to be able to lament the blooms of any of their plants - we lowly beginners are so thrilled if something actually blooms for us, it could be unquestionably ugly, crippled even, and we'd still feel victorious. Don't get me wrong - I've had a few that were disappointments, but far less disappointing than those on which the buds blasted, or the plant just keeled over for its own reasons. And then, there are those that many OT members see as beautiful and perfect, and my own aesthetic senses are really squirming.
