Another of my Mazzies . This one is a primary hybrid between the very well know M.veitchii and M.ayacabana. I know veitchii well , it is a popular mazzie species often seen here in UK. The other one is unknown to me. I looked it up , and find that it is quite similar to veitvhii and indeed to this hybrid, which leads me to the question of "what was the point of this hybrid ?". A lot of hybridisng seems to be like that ;maybe it is simply a case of a breeder needing plants to sell, and wanting something different ? The fact that it isn't different will not dawn on most customers , even enthusiasts, until they have bought the plant and flowered it.. Just philosophising !

Flowers about 4 or 5 inches tip to toe, including those long tails ; the large area of flowers is perhaps 4 cm in the North-South direction. Three flowers on this small plant in three inch or maybe 3.5 inch pot.
It brightens up a dull day, whatever I grumpily mutter about the hybridising .

I've considered trying a Masdevallia even though we get periods of heat. My OH just despises them for some reason...so I decided against it. This one may just change his mind! The iridescent purple sheen is perfect!

That is interesting ; 20 +_ years ago I had a small greenhouse ( 12 x 10 ft ) full of my mazzies and pleuros, and my OH always walked past it, when showing visitors around the garden - saying " you don't want to go in there - its full of weeds". ( I sold all the mazzies etc, turned up the thermostat, went to Thailand, and came back with a couple of boxes of Vandas, to fill that house ,as an example of the old proverb, that its an ill wind which blows no-one any good...)

I think she must have forgotten that - since after I sneaked a few into the current greenhouse ( which she never enters anyway) and took one or two into the house as part of my basket in the hall , she thought them quite pretty !
