Great shots Ian of a neautiful Cstm. I love the colour and the fimbriated lip. Last night during a storm here the spike of my Cstm which I mentioned in my previous post was snapped off. I am now putting the spike with the blooms in a vase and hope that tomorrow the flowers will have opened sufficiently for me to take a photo. What lousy luck - waiting 3 seasons to get male flowers and this had to happen! Maybe that's punishment for not contributing to the Phor Thor .....hehehe.

Oh dear!! how unfortunate. hopefully it will still proceed to bloom. sometimes it is just luck, i had one catasetum where i waited for a year and half for the bloom, when it finally arrived, it was on chinese new year and i had to go back to hometown for a few days. when i came back, the media was too try and one by one the buds fell off. that was about 7 months ago, and now it is putting up with a spike again.
well, i don't think Phor Tor Kong will release his anger on the orchids

Thanks for the lovely comments Branka and Yew Sung. cheers

Yesterday visited an old orchid friend. I had not seen him for some time though he lives only 20 km away. He was the Chairman of the Kedah Orchid Society and was once a very keen exhibitor and won numerous prizes, including Champion Exhibitor and Best Plants categories. I was very impressed with the plants he still keeps though he is semi-retired from orchid competitions. He gave me 3 plants a Blc Bryce Canyon (winner at numeous shows), the original Lc Netrasiri 'Fireball' (not the mericlones) and a keiki of a NOID Paphio a yellow Cochlopetalum which resembles a Paph primulinum. I must admit that Paph really made my day. It is a small plant, and the spike is about 3 inches tall and the flower measures about 2 inches vertically. The colour is much darker yellow than the Paph primulinum in pictures that I have seen. He was given the Paph by someone who only said that it was a species (orkid hutan).

There were at least 10 blooming plants of the Catasetinae family 4 Catasetums and the others mostly yellow Cycnoches and Cycnodes including Jumbo Puff and Taiwan Gold. They were very impressive blooms on spikes that were 1 1/2 ft to 2 ft. long.A pity I didn't bring a camera.

yeap, i do like to see post on Paphs, they are so unique. did not try to cultivate them because i do believe i will do them less harm by looking at pics rather than planting them. in addition, my area here is very hot and dry.
yes, very true, Jumbo orchids from Taiwan produces a lot of excellent hybrids. when catasetum are cross with clowesia or cycnoches, the hybrid's spike is more showy and last longer compare to catasetum alone. Taiwan Gold's flower are very vibrant and attractive!
