Default Tetratonia Dark Prince 'AkiiKii', AM/AOS

This is a primary hybrid of the native Jamaican cattleya-type orchid, Broughtonia sanguinea, and Tetramica canaliculata. I've come across several other clonal names for Dark Prince, but only a reference or two to 'AkiiKii'. I bought it from a vendor at the Naples Orchid Show who informed me that this was a division of the actual awarded plant. A small division, but with robust new growth, and if it ever warms up here in FL, I think it will take off. The color in the photos is pretty accurate - it's a richly-colored bloom.

A bit spindly, but I like the overall plant shape - especially if I can get some new spikes started.

Oh Maura, What a beauty! I'm finding more and more orchids I want on this forum. Would it be hard to grow for a beginner in my area of Australia? I was born in Jamaica, so am so happy to see something from there!

I don't know Australia well enough to answer that question, Sue, but I can tell you it thrives in a Jamaica-like climate.

The close up photo is awesome and love the veins that so prominent. I have species Tetramica grow like a weed but no sign of spike at all maybe need little bit cooler to induce flower.

Nice! Was just at the Port St Lucie Orchid show, very nice turn out, but no one was selling Broughtonias! I have a couple hybrids, but not the real thing.
