    Default Barkeria melanocaulon

Barkeria melanocaulon is definitely worth growing if you can manage to give it the conditions it needs: intermediate temperatures while in growth, bright light, a dry cool rest in winter and very high relative humidity to keep its aerial roots happy. It resents pot culture and should be mounted or given a small hanging basket to allow its long, thick roots to dangle in the air. These flowers are now starting to go over, but the plant has been in bloom since Christmas.

I just remembered that I changed the label on this plant last year. The correct identification is Barkeria whartoniana. Barkeria melanocaulon (which was the name on the label when I bought it) is almost identical but the column lies flat, directly on top of the lip in that species, whereas in Barkeria whartoniana the column stands free and points away from the lip, as you can see in the picture.

Bruce, can you please change the title of this thread?

Very beautiful flower. I don't see these in my neck of the woods, guess it,s too hot for them.
    Congrats.
