The difference between Schomburgkjia and Myrmeco' is not easy to discover ; but Schombo's themselves are now Laelias ( not sure if that is all of them, or only some). And I'm not sure if Myremeco's are Laelias either. But the physical distinction in flowers and plants is such ( morpholological is the proper word, not physical) that this is one tag I leave unchanged.
If and when I want to put a plant up to the RHS for award, I know that the wrong name merely gives the botanists on the committee an opportunity to demonstrate their superiority , and will not affect the chances ; not that this a a likely scenario anyway, since the committee is not exactly user friendly ( get your plant to the Secretary by 8.30 AM in Central London - Westminster actually- which entails me leaving home at 4.30am and travelling on the most expensive trains of the day....)
The Committee does meet at the major flower shows , but if my plants are there, the Society display manager will not be too happy to have, possibly a star plant , removed from the show for half of the time , whilst judging takes place.

If you search posts here , you should find at least two Schombo species and one hybrid ( with Laelia) which I have shown in the last year. S.( or M if you prefer) rosea most recently, thomsoniae and undulata before that, and a Schombolaelia ( which I can't see on the Mac I am using - its probably on my older Windows PC which I have not switched on today)

My experience is that in captivity, these plants don't get anywhere near as big. I have flowered perhaps 4 different species now, and never had a flower spike more than 30 or perhaps 33inches ( plus the individual flower stalks). You might do better in LA , although I suppose that you get some cooling effect from the ocean, gteh same way as I do in Southern England.
