Have not tried this method yet, so can't vouch for its effectiveness.
I'm familiar with the white card technique -perhapsI read that by Ken Rockwell, or, with my memory, Phillip might have taught me that. I usually customize the spectrum on my white balance even if I'm using AWB - You know - going into the Menu all the way to the spectrum chart and then by trial and error, moving your "center point" somewhere ridiculously extremely far into the red/blue quadrant or whatever. The complaint I have is that I have to reset this every time the light changes slightly, or, if I'm moving through a botanical garden, readjust with every new light source, every new subject color. It's terribly inefficient when you're a tourist- makes taking my Nikon with me the central purpose of the visit, with everything else, including really looking around, taking a back seat to the camerawork. Take a tripod with you and you're just going to be working a photography session instead of enjoying the trip. Under the right conditions, frighteningly enough, my iPad takes better pictures in an instant without leaving me 3 hours behind the other people with me.

I realize that a lot of this is because I'm very new at this and therefore very slow - not to say - wrong half the time - at checking and re-checking my settings. I also have trouble with anything but a very fast shutter speed if I don't have a tripod, because medication I take makes my hands shake a bit.

Maybe all this means that I just need to accept that my DSLR is my at-home studio camera, while the G11 and iPad are the travel equipment I should have along - until I get a lot better at this art of photography, anyway.

WOW-o-Wow Maura! This zygo has so many elements that you have to stop for a bit and take it all in! Congrat on your find!

I got my first zygo as a raffle prize at my society last month, hope it is as interesting as yours when it spikes!

This is my zygo. What I first thought was a new growth has turned out to be a spike.
How exciting. I can't wait to see it flower.

Lovely zygo. It's always so exciting when when the unexpected happens - especially when it's an orchid spike.

It has only two buds and one of them has started to open today. Once they arrive at this stage, it goes quite fast. first picture is from 8:24 this morming and second picture from 13:25.
