Default Rossioglossum Rawdon Jester in Bloom

This will be the second blooming on this orchid this year. Last flowers before this were in the late Fall (December) of 2012. Six blooms at about 5 Inches wide each. Love the heavy substance of these flowers. AL

Bred by my long time friend David Stead, when he ran a now defunct English orchid nursery near the city of Leeds ( actually next to Rawdon Hospital - hence the first part of the name ; the second part comes from the parent O.grande being called the clown orchid, I expect you know why , and clown= jester in old English). He had - like many breeders- been trying to set pollen on what was then Odontoglossum grande ( now Rossio' grande) for years ; I think the cross is supposedly O.grande x O.williamson - which is a very similar but smaller flower carried in much better heads of flowers - say a dozen, instead of the 5 or so which is normal with grande ( although very well grown, I have seen 9 on a single spike). Other breeders doubt that it is a hybrid at all, but it is not just a selfing either - there is some special genetic term for a self induced triploid, or something like that. Certainly I don't think anyone has ever successfully bred it onwards . The plant seems to be identical to the grande parent with just one exception ; if O.grande is not given a short dry rest - maybe as little as 2 or 3 weeks - when the bulb makes up, it does not flower. If it is given that rest it flowers very soon afterwards then rests through the winter. But the hybrid, if that is what it is, is not fussy , and can flower immediately. or rest until Spring and then flower, or just flower and then carry on growing and flower again within another six months - as you found.

Geoff; I have Rossioglossum grande also. I've had it for about three years or abit more now. It originally came from the grower/vender in near flawless shape and in spike. I believe the Yellow coloration on the blooms was somewhat deeper and the flower size was at least a inch wider. However it did not take the High Desert 5 months of warm/hot weather well and suffered some leave/pseudo bulb loss until I brought it into our air conditioned house where it revived somewhat. For those that want to raise Rossioglossum grande it cannot take 80 plus degrees heat F. for long periods and in its natural environment it is use to lows in the forties and fifthy's F. and highs in the sixties and seventies F. I in the last almost two years I have had a very effective evaporative cooler going in the greenhouse during the hot months and it never goees below 60 degrees F. or above 80 degrees F. This has been enough to keeo this orchid going, though it now has like three 'minature' leafed bulbs and low and behold a new spike I just noticed afew days ago ! What the flowers will be like god only knows..............AL
