    Default Stanhopea

    Hi Everyone...

I need help confirming what this Stanhopea is... at the moment it has no tag because when I got it many moons ago, I never worried about tags and I lost it... I do have some kind of dreamlike memory that it might have been something like nigroviolacea...

anyways, here she is in full glory...

oh and the smell is so yummy... very much like sniffing a vanilla pod!

    cheers

    Default tigrina, sure

It does look like one of the tigrinas, could be nigroviolacea, and the fragrance is right. shape of the various parts of the lip are a match as well. very nice blooms!

    Hi Tim,

Beautiful and Breathtaking BLOOMS!!! You should be proud!

After looking at the picture early this morning, I recognize it is either Stanhopea tigrina or Stanhopea nigroviolacea but hold back since I could not decide which one is more likely. So I wait and see whether anyone else thinks so too. Apparently Pete thought of the same. It is very difficult to distinguish those two species and a lot of people still refer to the later as Stan. tigrina var. nigroviolacea. The nigroviolacea variety has darker and bigger marks on the petals so the flowers are almost completely dark. The tigrina has many other varieties and less dark in color. More pictures of the flower from different angles wil help us to identify it better.

Have fun and Happy New Year.
    Cheers.
    Hoa.

Can't help with the ID, but wow, gorgeous! How long do the blooms last, a few days?

And you have sun there! (We are going on all time record setting 14 days in a row without any direct sunlight here! ARGGH!!!!!!!!!!!!)

    Great job Tim!

no idea what it is, but it certainly does look "predatory"...
