Surprisingly,I think they are actually part of the Catt. family. I know they grow under very similar conditions and share a wonderful fragrance.

The scientific classification places the Genus Encyclia and and the Genus Cattleya in the same Alliance as Cattleya.

    Family: Orchidaceae.............. Orchidaceae
    Subfamily: Epidendroideae...........Epidendroideae
    Tribe: Epidendreae...............Epidendreae
    Subtribe: Laeliinae....................Laeliinae
    Alliance: Cattleya.....................Cattleya
    Genus: Encyclia......................Cattleya

A hybrid made with both Genus is a Catyclia (Cty.)

Yeah, sorry this was meant to answer the dendrobium question. For some reason not all of my posts latch on to the intended target.

That is good to know though, I don't always concern myself with scientific terms, I get girly around plants its mostly smell, appearance, etc.... I only know some scientific names. For a guess, I wasn't far off
