    Default Gastrochilus japonicus

This was from my first purchase from Hawaii made in November. It is a mini, at least it is compact right now. I don't know how large it can get. It has grown quite a bit since I've been tending it. Both roots and leaves have been added. I don't really allow it to dry out much. I water it in the morning and in the afternoon everyday. It will not be going outside for the summer.

It had formed the spike by the time I received it, but it was very immature. I have been able to do well enough to bloom it.

I really know little about it but it looks like I'll need to find a bigger piece of media for it before too long.

Today is the first day of being almost fully open. I will add a new picture in a couple days with more open blooms and perhaps wider opened blooms.

Harvey, whatever you are doing, keep doing it. Everything about it says that it's a very happy plant. Gastrochilus stays pretty small and light requirements are not high. If memory serves me, the leaves are pretty delicate and can burn easily in sun. When it needs a larger mount, just lash the one it's on to a new one. Btw, it's mounted on tree fern.

I bought some 'tree fern' on the internet and it is much different than this dense little slab it is on. I am looking for a source for this type. Any suggestions? Feel free to PM me anyone. Thanks.

Tree fern refers to the trunk material from a couple of species of tree ferns. It comes in 3 forms, slabs such as you see here, which are sawn from the trunk. Pieces, which are well, the little sticks that break off the slabs, and heartwood which is in the center of the trunk. In all forms takes forever to break down, and orchids tend to like it, but on the other hand, it isn't sustainably harvested at this time, so some people try to avoid it.

Cute lil bugger. I'll have to get another one someday. Had one for several years but then it died.

Very nice, but the correct name is Gastrochilus somae. These two species are not the same. The real Gastrochilus japonicus isn't really in culture.
