    Default Stanhopea nigroviolacea

Hello everyone. I'm new here, and am posting photos of my Stanhopeas from this past Summer. (I'm in Australia, so our Summer is Dec - Feb). I love Stanhopeas, and wish I had more space overhead to get one of each. (wishful thinking) Pic spam on its way
Anyway, this photo is of the first Stanhopea I got, S. nigroviolacea. The perfume!

I love the way these bloom. It seems everybody I know can grow them....I just kill them.

I just LOVE the perfume of this one.

I'm sorry you've not had any success - they are usually pretty tough.

I've had this one for almost 10 years now, and it has given me heavenly perfume every december for 8 of those years. I do water it every day in Spring and summer, and back off to twice weekly in Winter. I fertilise most weeks from Spring through to the end of Autumn.

It lives in a shadehouse, hung up with my other Stanhopeas.

I was told they like to be hung in a lemon tree - if you have one of those you never know, you could turn the tide.

My next-door neighbour has 4 of them hanging underneath the carport and they bloom for him every year.

I hope you decide to try again. They are worth it, don't you agree?

kharma : I would imagine that yours should possibly start to bloom in another year or so. It looks really healthy from your photo. Keep up the fertilising from Spring so that the flower spikes can form.

Mine get good light all Winter - my shadehouse is under a very large Acer Negundo tree which is deciduous, and then the light is dappled from late Spring until Autumn (Fall).

The first flower spike which comes through the bottom or the sides of the pot is a pale brown colour, as the spike is protected by a covering. You'll be watching this for what seems like ages

It should open by the middle of summer - the hottest time of the year. Then, if you're like me, you be visiting it several times a day to inhale that gorgeous scent.

    Good luck with it.
