    Default Stanhopea graveolens

I purchased this orchid from the sale table at an orchid club meeting. It was labelled Stanhopea Golden Yellow, and at that stage of my orchid career (beyond the Australian native Dendrobium speciosum and kingianum) I had no idea that this was not a valid species name.

It flowered beautifully for me for several years, I put it into a larger basket, it flowered even more beautifully.

By this time I knew that Golden Yellow was not a species name, so I sent photos to several knowledgable people and asked for an ID.

I now know that it is Stanhopea graveolens, and it has a 'perfume' very reminiscent of mothballs!

zain, yes it is. We are in a temperate zone, so I grow cool-growing and a few intermediate orchids.

I would love to be able to grow tropicals, as I'm sure that you can, but as I don't have a heated greenhouse, that's out of the question.

My orchids are mostly in a shadehouse, with a few Den speciosum scattered around the garden outside.
