    Default Stanhopea oculata

This was also purchased online as a seedling, at the same time as Stanhopea embreei.
(I also purchased an Stanhopea insignis seedling, but managed to kill it)

It, too, took 6 years to flower, and did so for the first time this summer. Such a pretty, dainty flower, with the faintest of perfumes.

I had a Stanhopea oculata until a few weeks ago. I had been growing if for a few years. It had yet to bloom, but was looking really beautiful. Then we had that polar vortex hit here and in combination with my greenhouse heater going out - well, now I have a brown mess. Glad yours is blooming and healthy. I'll be getting another of these as I love Stanhopea orchids. This time I hope to get a division of a mature plant so I don't have to wait such a long time for the plant to mature.

    cheers,
    BD

BD...... I remember that event and it still saddens me. Even in Florida we got hit hard. One of my heating systems defaulted and I lost half of my bloomage to shock.

How terrible! This winter has been dreadful in the northern hemisphere. I have an online friend who lives in Wyoming. She's been snowed in so badly that her husband has had to pull their two kiddies on a sled 2 miles each morning to catch the school bus. Several times her neighbour has kept the girls overnight because it's impossible to get to their place. (They live on acreage)
So sorry about your oculata. And I agree about getting a division - I'm not going to get any more seedlings of orchids. They don't cost as much, but 6 years is a bit long to wait when you're my age.
