This is the first blooming for my vanilla vine. Woo hoo! The flowers are much larger than I expected.

Wow. looks cute. I had one few years back, flowers last just a day and managed to pollinate it in the morning and harvested Vanilla beans after 6 months or so.

I got a large plastic pot, dumped a ton of junk (broken pots, old potting materials, packing peanuts, a couple small shovels of potting soil and some bark, banana peels and coffee rinds, egg shells, etc), mixed it up and put a topping of plain dirt on top...maybe five or six inches deep. Then I put the vines on top and bent a piece of wire into a "U" to hold the vine against the dirt. Do not bury the vine in the dirt as it will rot. Water as you would a houseplant. I also added a three foot tall trellis into the pot and as the vine grew longer just kept wrapping it around and around the trellis. Last summer the vine climbed a wall...but the roots are not difficult to remove from walls, windows...etc. lol You can grow these in a sunny window or under a tree for a little shade. My vanilla doesn't care for full sun although it can take as much as a vanda before burning. I give them a ton of fertilizer and spray for bugs. Bugs like to hide on the undersides of the leaves. Other than that, they are pretty basic. I think you will find it easy to grow. Best of luck...you will love watching the vines grow fatter and fatter. Just remember...if you cut the vine you will delay blooming. They hate to be trimmed in any way. My small piece took about 3 or 4 years before it got big enough to bloom and in spite of it being the first blooming it is really putting on a show.

Yeah, I am blessed with space and amazing growing conditions down here in Florida. My husband just shakes his head when I bring home another monster plant...or one that will grow into a monster. I don't know why but the bigger they grow the better I like em when it comes to orchids. I just bought another Shomburgkia that already spans a clay bulb pan. lol I am so hoping for a spike once it gets a few roots put out.
