Cymbidium Nagalux "Hatsume" is a first generation hybrid from one of the Chinese cymbidium species - Cym.goeringii. I am very attracted to the Chinese species, which are quite different from the well-known Cymbidium hybrids based originally on the much larger flowered, and more fee-flowering Indian, Burmese, Thai etc species. They have quite grassy foliage, often a plant with half a dozen leads can be accommodated in a 4 ½ inch pot quite comfortably, and so on.
Cym goeringii in the wild is often single flowered, occasionally 2-4 flowered. It is crossed here with Cym Alexanderi, one of the old early "standard" cymbidiums .
I have had problems getting the colour right in the pics - not at all sure it is right now ! In reality it is what I call jade green , a cool greyish light green, which I found very attractive.
Of course one of the points of getting into the Chinese species is to widen the flowering period . Most of my Cyms will b e flowering from say late November until March, but with careful picking and a bit of luck I can extend that from now until almost June.
And what brilliant timing , Bournemouth Orchid Show ( Autumn Show) is this coming Saturday - here is my entry for Class 1 - any one Cymbidium.....
