Catsetums are the generic group for apparently way-out crosses. This one is Galeandra devoniana x Catasetum fimbriatum.
The award - BM - Botanical Medal ( I expect) is in recognition of the difference in parents, making this a cross of botanical interest. TOGA is - I suppose, Taiwan Orchid Growers Association, since Jumbo Orchids , the breeder , is in that country.
Orchidwiz illustrates this clone, but shows slightly different colouring, with a band close to the frilly edge rather redder than is faintly visible on my plant. Probably cultural - see below.
The flowering bulb - the very latest growth - started off about July this year, when the larger bulb behind it - which started much earlier this year, completed its growth ; that larger bulb has yet to flower.Maybe it will, and have better (?) coloring.
I had been struggling with this group of orchids, succeeding with a few , failing with most , for several years, until I realised that they need much more heat than my greenhouse normally provides. Then - maybe in May or June this year, I built a small enclosure of clear acrylic sheets in the greenhouse, put some extra heat in there - to give a night minimum ( stat controlled) about 19 or 20 C., and since then they have all grown better and better.
Today I notice several plants have just started to show leaves yellowing ( they are annually deciduous, mostly ) so I guess I will dry them all off, as November proceeds, and turn off the heat for a couple of months - they will then be at the temperature of the rest of the greenhouse - night minimum of 12, and then I'll turn up the heat again at middle of February to try and get them off to an early start for a longer growing season.
Any comments on these ideas from the catasetum experts here, will be read with interest !

That is a really pretty Catasetum hybrid! Most of my Catasetum are in dormancy already. Still 2 getting ready to bloom then to sleep. One, a clowsia, already has shed its leaves, Leaving the bulbs and 2 spikes.

That is how I ended up with 9 catasetum! One of the nice things growing them is they spend 1/3 of the year dormant and require no care while dormant.

I only have 8 of them and I have a few of those that have started the dormant stage but the rest I still see no spikes. I am not sure that I will, this spring when I repotted mine I used a orchid mix for Paph's instead of the sphagnum moss which the few that I had at the time were in when they bloomed for me last fall, they are not doing as well as they were when they were in the sphagnum, I do take mine out of their pot when they start the dormant season and leave them in an empty clay pot until new growth and new roots appear in the spring at which point I will use the sphagnum once more.

Geoff, these pictures are beautiful, so are the blooms, love the blooms you get from this species.

Interesting cross. The form and color come mostly from the Catasetum parent, but that full lip really reflects the Galeandra influence. Looks like there are about 8 Catasandra hybrids registered.

BM from TOGA stands for Bronze medal. They also give SM and GM awards - Olympic style.
