Mazzies are good for providing this bright jazzy orange colour - a few similar hybrids or species all together provide a nice hot spot in a mixed orchid display. Not that they are all this colour of course, but I can't off-hand think of anything else which provides this colour so freely.

I had not associated Canada with hot summers, but peehaps that just shows my ignorance.
Btw, did tou know that masdevallia growers (and books on the subject) have their own specialist language in one important respect ? With most orchids, (UK) books, amd perhaps most books, write of cool, intermediate and wrm, as meaning say, 50, 55and 60 deg F. or 10, 12.5 and 15 C as the necessary minimum night temperature. But for Masdevallia growers, the figures are 5 deg. F cooler . so a cool growing Mazzie needs 45 deg. Min, and so on. They Also have a further. Classification - cold growing, meaning 40. probably the max temp. Is more important anyway, and as a further complication, I ignore everything said about different Mazzies, and buy them because I think I will like the flowers, without worrying whether they are cold or hot growing. And they all seem to grow together for me.

Thank you for that temperature definition Geoff. I'd not seen that before and had wondered what was meant. I live in one of the warmer area's in Canada. During late June, early July it's common for the temps to get into the low 80's. We often get heat waves during the same period that reach the low to mid 90's and will last for a week or two. I use AC but with the cost of electricity going through the roof I can only keep the house around 75 during the summer.

Beautiful! I so much wish my Masd's would bloom. They look happy, grow new leaves but so far have not bloomed. The leaves on yours look lighter green than mine. Maybe mine are not getting enough light.
