    Default Stanhope oculata in bloom

Alien birds (Stanhopea oculata) have landed in my Orchid grow area. Fragrance is like butter cookies. There is a second spike on the same plant.

I love butter cookies! And this Stanhope too!

Jack recently sent me a Stanhope and now I have one (an unnamed hybrid).

Beautiful Zain, I have one of these and wish that it would bloom for me! Where do you keep yours and what do you have yours planted in. It was listed as blooming size when I got it and I have mine in a 8 inch mesh basket and has grown since I got it but still no blooms, do you do anything special?

Harvey I hope that Stanhope thrives for you! I received it as a gift with another orchid I purchased but does not like my environment, hated to see it not grow because of my heat!

Very Nice! There is one of these in the orchid greenhouse at our local botanical gardens. A couple of months ago it had spikes about 6" long. The next time I was in the flowers had opened but slugs had destroyed every one.

It is growing in bright light (covered by a banana tree) and is potted in a sphagnum moss on a basket lined with coco fiber. It does not seem to a regular bloomer. I have 2 plants of same size and same culture next to each other and only one of them bloomed. Looks like they are a bit temperamental

Very nice, Sriram.. What are your winter low temperatures? Some stanhopeas need cooling to initiate spikes, otherwise they remain vegetative. Some (e.g. tigrina) flower reliably in the highlands of Malaysia but are prone to heat stress when grown in the lowlands.
