    Default Dendrochilum cobbianum ???

I have had this for several years but this is the first year it has bloomed. The reason for the "???" a friend stopped by and he thought the tag was wrong, I then sent a picture to the person I thought I had gotten it from to learn that he did not sell it to me as he does not grow them but he thought it was named correctly, anyone else want to tell me if it is the correct species name or another name, thanks!

There are a lot of Dendrochilum species. Ddc. cobbianum is one of the most commonly seen, and I wouldn't have questioned the tag from what can be seen in the picture. With a quick look at a few other species in subgenus Platyclinis I didn't find anything that might be this similar to Ddc. cobbianum except maybe Ddc. abbreviatum. What is the full length of the inflorescence? Did your friend say why they thought the tag was wrong?

No he did not say anything else except that he did not think it was a cobbianum that he had seen before. The inflorescence is 17 inches from the top of where it is coming out of the pb, I don't know how far down the spike starts. Thanks for the info Kirk, I will do some more research to see if I can get more info.

I had found a website that is strictly about Dendrochilums so I sent an email with pictures to ask the correct species name. I got a reply just awhile ago from Trey and he informs me that this is a Dendrochilum latifolium possibly variety macranthum. From the pictures he has on his website I would say he is right!

Thanks Yew Sung for your comment!

I saw that website too, but didn't have much time to look at it. It does seem to be Dendrochilum central. If anyone is interested enough in Dendrochilum to build a site like that, he's probably the guy who knows.
