    Default Maxillaria rufescens first blooming

This opened this morning. It's not very big, but its smells so good. It's very similar to Maxillaria tenuifolia. There are two more buds to open. I wonder how long the blooms last.

What does it smell like? If it last as long my tenuifolia then you will have those blooms for awhile! Well done!

It smells like vanilla and perhaps also cinnamon. I'll check Orchidspecies what it says about how long the blooms last.

For me it's the first time. I've managed to kill a few tenuifolias though.

Second bud has opened and the first flower is still good. Just one more to go.

Baker's description in OrchidWiz says the flower is usually not long lasting. That's pretty subjective in the range of orchid flowers from few hours to many months.

Apparently this species has been confused with a few others over the years, and is quite variable on its own besides. And this section of Max was switched to Mormolyca in 2007 when Maxillaria went through a major revision. Though not universally accepted you may also see it under that name.
