I did a web search for Epicattleya Veitchii Geoff. Apparently someone got it right. There are several variations of the cross pictured (accurate?) using both the yellow and orange coccinea with quite different results.

Many years ago, an orchid grower up in New Hampshire had a magnificent specimen of Unchained Melody. When he passed away, he left the plant to the society who divided it up among the members. A friend of mine there has one of those divisions. His plant is now close to 3 ft. across and is so heavy it has to be moved on a dolly when he brings it to the annual show (which is this coming weekend). I have seen it with literally hundreds of blooms on it and you can smell it's fragrance from a mile away. I believe it has been awarded by AOS but not sure about that. I will shoot him a note and see what he thinks the background is of his plant.

It is a good grower. I have about 4 six inch pots, each with 3 or more growths, and most of them in spike. These are from bits left over after I divided up and mostly sold off two 15 inch pans of the plant, all from a 3 or 4 bulb growth some years ago. As an old man, now, I can't lift big pots. When anything needs more than a 8inch pot or perhaps a 12 inch pan, I have to think of dividing up, which is shame , one 12 inch pot can be far better than three or four Six inch pots of the same thing. One the other hand, several six inch pots of several different things is better than one very large pot of just one thing.

My friend confirmed it is cristata x flaccida. He said it is nearly in full bloom and heading to the show today in his van.
