    Default Pterostylis

Ever since I saw one of these in the wild... down the road from where I live... I have wanted to have one... well, now I have about 4 different species...

The first to flower is Pterostylis nutans

As you can see it is a terrestrial. The plants grow from little white round underground tuber during the winter months and die back in summer when it is generally hot and dry.

A close up of the flower -

Pterostylis...Greek: pteron = a wing; and stylos = a column; hence refers to the winged column of the flowers.
nutans...Latin: nutans = nodding; refers to the drooping flower.

Very cool, Tim-O! The pictures I have show that they tend to open a little more. And are apparently pollinated by gnats and mosquitoes (if not themselves.) If it opens any further, please post a subsequent pic!

lol, this little one has been open almost a month... I don't think it'll open any more...

there are so many different species of this genus that there is a fair amount of variation...

when the other ones i have flower, I'll post those for comparison.

    cheers

Quite cool - thanks! The pics I saw showed all with a very slight opening. Similar to a Jack-in-the-Pulpit, but with a more narrow clearance. It was in an orchid encyclopedia though, so I'm sure "mileage will vary."

Intriguing species, Tim-O! Self-pollinated, huh? Darn those incestuous orchids, don't wanna open for us to see ... Hheheeeeeee ...
What is the attraction besides the fact that some of them grow down the road from where you live?
    Cheers. Hoa.
