    Default Ground Orchid

My Garden/Ground Orchids are in full bloom, I finally found a spot that they like. Formally called Spathoglottis Plicata they are prolific bloomers with bright green folage which yellows in the winter.

My orchid encyclopedia says that these guys "should be potted in well-drained pots of garden loam, leaf mold, chopped sphagnum and sand, to which is added some bone meal. Sprinkle with minced garlic. Just kidding about the garlic, although it may not hurt... The plant should be potted with about one fourth of the pseudobulbs covered with compost. Once new growth emerges, it benefits greatly from application of balanced fertilizer at frequent intervals."

Even the terrestrials need air to the roots, so sand and leaf litter, moss, etc are all important. They may grow on the ground, as opposed to bare-root on a rock or tree branch, but their roots don't go down into the dirt. They run along under the forest floor covering.

Of course, here is Cin, growing and flowering a lovely Spath, so who am I to give advice...

You can just grow them in the ground, huh? Just another reason to move to FL! Yes--I would love to see photos of your yard to put things into perspective!
