    Default Masd spp

Help needed with IDing this species. The flower is about 6" tall and 3/4 inches wide. I know it is a Peruvian species. I didn't get a good side view but will post the profile of it anyway, for it may help in ID.

UPDATE: Masd antonii as per information in Post Number 5.

    Ron,

Any idea where in Peru and elevation it was collected? Your specimen seems quite untypical for Subsection Caudatae, I haven't seen anything like this yet. This flower is VERY similar to Masdevallia caudata, but has something more to it. To me, it somewhat looks to be a cross of a Dracula species and Mas. caudata. Check the petals to see if they are more 'Dracula-like', and if the labellum seems to form some small mushroom-shaped pouch. Another possibility is a screwy blooming. I find that imported Pleurothallids (usually Dracula, Masdevallia, and segregates) will have misshapen flowers during first blooming in cultivation. This could be caused from lack of moisture during shipping, change in temperature, or being bumped around. It typically occurs more with plants in low spike, or growths that are actively growing. Any other pics of this plant? It's very interesting and quite beautiful (in that odd kind of way)...
